About This Caprese Burgers

You may have heard of a caprese salad, but have you ever heard of a caprese burger? This low-carb and low sodium turkey burger recipe tastes just as good as it looks! Instead of a carb-loaded hamburger bun, we use ripe, grilled beefsteak tomatoes which saves on calories and sodium, making this recipe both heart healthy and diabetic friendly. And for those beef lovers, don’t be mistaken that using lean ground turkey will make for a flavorless burger. By incorporating grated carrot and red onion into the recipe, along with a variety of fresh and dried herbs and spices, you are guaranteed a juicy burger that is packed with both nutrients and, most importantly, flavor! In addition, kids are going to love this bright and colorful meal. And if you have kids that don’t like to eat their veggies, they are already hidden inside the burger! Get your grill ready because these amazingly healthy caprese burgers will quickly become a family picnic favorite.

How to Make Caprese Burgers

Turkey Burgers

  1. Step 1

Grease the grill grates with nonstick cooking spray. Preheat grill to 400°F.

  2. Step 2

In a medium mixing bowl, combine all of the ingredients and gently knead together until well incorporated. Form into 4 patties.

  3. Step 3

Lightly spray the cut sides of the tomatoes with nonstick cooking spray. Set aside.

  4. Step 4

Cook the burgers for 10 minutes with the lid closed, flipping halfway through, until they reach an internal temperature of 165°F. Melt the cheese on the burgers during the last minute of cooking. Remove from the grill, place on a large serving plate and cover lightly with aluminum foil to keep warm.

  5. Step 5

Grill the tomatoes cut side down to slightly char them, about 4 to 6 minutes. Remove heat, place on the serving plate with the cooked burgers.

For Serving

  1. Place a ¼-cup of fresh basil leaves on the bottom half of each tomato. Top with the turkey burgers and drizzle each with a ½ tablespoon of balsamic reduction. Add the top half of tomatoes and serve.
