Heart Healthy Morning Bread Recipe

               
This healthy, homemade bread will fill your kitchen with the aroma of toasted nuts, brown sugar and sesame seeds. Whole-wheat flour ensures a hearty crumb, while low-fat yogurts lends a bit of tangy bounce to every bite.

Ingredients
Recipe yields 2 servings
4 cups whole wheat flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
2 Tbsp brown sugar
1/4 cup skim milk powder (optional)
1/2 cup sunflower seeds or chopped nuts
2 1/2 cups low-fat yogurt
2 Tbsp sesame seeds or poppy seeds

Directions
Step 1

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Lightly coat two 9 x 5-inch pans with nonstick cooking spray.

Step 2

In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, salt, brown sugar and skim milk powder and stir until well blended.

Step 3

Add the nuts or sunflower seeds and yogurt and stir just to moisten the dry ingredients. The dough will be very thick and stiff.

Step 4

Spoon the batter into the loaf pans. Smooth the tops and sprinkle with the sesame and/or poppy seeds.

Step 5

Bake for about 50 to 60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center of each loaf comes out clean.
