How to Make Turkey Swedish Meatballs

Turkey Meatballs

  1. Step 1

In a large, deep skillet, heat 1 tablespoon olive oil over medium heat. Add onion and garlic; saute for 5 minutes until onions are softened. Remove from heat and cool.

  2. Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, combine cooled onion mixture, panko bread crumbs, Parmesan cheese, egg whites, skim milk, oregano, black pepper, allspice, nutmeg, and salt. Add ground turkey and gently incorporate other ingredients until evenly combined (Note: be careful not to overwork the ground turkey because it will make the meat tough).

  3. Step 3

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Using lightly dampened hands, roll meat mixture into 1½-inch meatballs and place on baking sheet. Refrigerate for 30 minutes.

  4. Step 4

Heat remaining 1 tablespoon olive oil over medium-high heat in same skillet used to cook the onions and garlic. Brown meatballs in small batches to allow them to be rotated in pan. Brown for 1 minute on each side. Remove from skillet and set back on baking sheet. Add additional oil and/or lower heat slightly as needed throughout browning process. Set meatballs aside.

Creamy Gravy Sauce

  1. Step 1

Add olive oil and butter to same skillet used to brown the meatballs. Heat over medium heat until butter is melted. Use rubber spatula to loosen browned bits from bottom of pan. Stir in flour and cook for 2 minutes, stirring constantly, until it begins to brown.

  2. Step 2

Gradually add chicken stock, a few splashes at a time, stirring constantly. Add Greek yogurt, Worcestershire sauce, and Dijon mustard, stirring until well combined. Stir in oregano, allspice, nutmeg, and black pepper. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer.

  3. Step 3

For Stovetop: Add meatballs back to skillet and spoon gravy sauce on top. Partially cover pan and cook for 10 to 15 minutes, until meatballs are heated through. For Slow Cooker: Add meatballs to bottom of slow cooker and pour gravy over meatballs. Cover and cook on high for 2 hours, or on low for 4 hours.

  4. Step 4

Garnish turkey Swedish meatballs with chopped parsley and, if desired, serve with low sodium mashed potatoes or egg noodles.
