The main reason most people follow a low sodium diet is to help manage their blood pressure and reduce their risk of stroke. Low sodium diets may also be recommended to people who have heart failure, kidney disease or problems with fluid retention.

Sodium is a mineral that the body needs in small doses to function properly, but having too much can increase blood pressure, which is one of the primary risk factors for heart disease and stroke. Sodium reduction may also lower your risk of kidney disease and may make it easier to lose and maintain weight.

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends adults limit sodium intake to 2,300mg or less, which is the amount of sodium in about 1 teaspoon of table salt. But if you are trying to follow a low sodium diet, the American Heart Association recommends keeping sodium levels to no more than 1,500mg per day. A doctor may recommend even less for your particular health needs.

Making small changes to how you prepare foods gives your palate time to adjust to eating food with less salt than you’re used to having. Here are some ways to start lowering sodium in your diet:

  • Cook whole, natural foods and avoid foods that come in a box, can or bag.
  • Flavor foods with fresh or dried herbs as well as seasonings like garlic, citrus and flavored vinegar. Here are some spices and herbs that help lower blood pressure naturally.
  • Limit high sodium foods like olives, pickles and cheese.
  • Taste your dish before deciding if it needs salt and keep the salt off the dinner table to avoid temptation.
