FAQs About Air Fryer Bang Bang Shrimp

Traditional restaurant versions are often deep-fried and loaded with a mayonnaise-based sauce. This version is much healthier because the shrimp are air-fried with minimal oil, and the sauce is made with a light Greek yogurt base.

Our healthy version is a simple mix of nonfat Greek yogurt, Thai sweet chili sauce, sriracha, and a touch of honey.

  1. Step 1

Preheat air fryer to 400°F. Lightly grease the air fryer basket with nonstick cooking spray. Line a large rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.

  2. Step 2

Place three medium mixing bowls in a line. In the first bowl, add the flour. In the second, whisk together the eggs, water, black pepper and salt. In the third, mix together the bread crumbs, thyme, garlic powder, onion powder and smoked paprika.

  3. Step 3

In small batches (about 4 or 5 shrimp at a time), coat the shrimp in the flour, then dredge in the egg mixture and then coat with the panko mixture. Place on the prepared baking sheet and repeat with the remaining shrimp.

  4. Step 4

Lightly spray the shrimp with nonstick cooking spray. In 2 or 3 batches, air fry for 12 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden brown and crispy. Remove from the air fryer and transfer to a serving bowl.

  5. Step 5

Drizzle the Bang Bang Sauce lightly over the top of the shrimp and garnish with sliced green onion. Serve the remaining sauce in a small dipping bowl.

Serving & Storage Tips

  • Appetizer: Serve the shrimp on a platter with the extra sauce on the side for dipping.
  • Tacos: Pile the shrimp into warm tortillas and top with shredded cabbage and a squeeze of lime.
  • Salad: Make it a meal by serving the shrimp over a bed of mixed greens with a light vinaigrette.
  • Bowl: Serve over rice or quinoa with steamed vegetables for a complete and healthy dinner.

Ingredient Substitutions

This recipe is fantastic as is, but here’s how to adapt it based on common questions and dietary needs.

  • For No Breading (Low-Carb/Keto): The most popular variation! For a no-breading option, skip the flour and panko. Toss 1 lb of shrimp with 1 tablespoon of cornstarch and the seasonings, then air fry as directed. The cornstarch will create a light, crispy coating.
  • Can I Use Frozen Shrimp? Yes. For the best results, thaw the shrimp completely before starting. Pat them very dry with paper towels to ensure they get crispy. If you must cook from frozen, you may need to add 3-5 minutes to the cooking time.
  • For a Different Breading: If you don't have panko, you can crush gluten-free crackers or even cornflakes to use as a breading.
  • Make it Spicier: Love the heat? Add an extra teaspoon of sriracha to the sauce.
