Alternative Cooking Methods

Want an even crispier and quicker version? These mac and cheese bites can easily be made in the air fryer for extra texture and faster cooking. You’ll skip the oven entirely and get perfectly golden brown bites in under 10 minutes.

Prep Time: 15 minutesCook Time: 7 to 9 minutes per batchTotal Time: ~35 minutes

How to make macaroni and cheese bites in an air fryer:Lightly grease silicone or paper mini muffin liners with nonstick cooking spray and place in air fryer basket (use a rack if needed for multi-layer cooking). Follow the recipe through step 3, spooning the mac and cheese mixture into the liners and topping with breadcrumbs and paprika. Air fry at 375°F for 7 to 9 minutes until golden and set. Let cool for 5 minutes before removing from liners.

Cooking Tips:

  • Lightly press the mixture into the liners so it holds together when the liners are removed.
  • Don’t overcrowd the basket. Work in batches to allow air flow between the bites.
  • Let bites cool slightly before removing for a cleaner release from the liners.

Serving & Storage Tips

  • Serve warm, room temp, or chilled for on-the-go snacks
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days
  • To reheat, pop them in a 350°F oven for 5 to 8 minutes until warmed through
  • Freeze in a single layer, then store in freezer bags for up to 2 months
  • Great as lunchbox fillers, party snacks, or part of a tray of healthy appetizers

Ingredient Substitutions

Use a standard muffin tin and increase bake time by 5 to 8 minutes.

Plain nonfat Greek yogurt works just as well.

Use regular sharp cheddar, but reduce the amount slightly to keep fat content in check.

Try whole wheat, chickpea, or lentil elbow macaroni for more fiber and protein.

Swap in gluten-free elbow macaroni and gluten-free breadcrumbs.
