If you’re looking to follow a low-calorie diet, be sure to get enough calories per day and focus on consuming highly nutritious foods that will keep you satisfied.

Here are some general guidelines to follow for a low calorie diet:

  • Low Calorie Meals: 400 calories or less (3 meals = 1,200 calories)
  • Low Calorie Snacks: 150 calories or less (2 snacks = 300 calories)
  • Total Calories Per Day: 1,500

Many dietitians recommend women consume at least 1,500 calories a day and men should strive for no less than 1,800 calories a day. Although most Americans consume more calories than their bodies need, it’s important to not lower calorie intake too much as you’ll miss important nutrients and not have enough energy to get you through the day.

New to a low calorie diet? Here are some tips to lower your caloric intake:

  • Drink more water. Before reaching for food, drink a glass of water. People often mistake thirst for hunger.
  • Make meals from scratch. Restaurant, takeout and processed foods are often much higher in calories.
  • Eat more protein. Adding more protein to your diet may help you consume fewer calories. Here are some high protein meal prep ideas.
  • Add more fiber to meals. Vegetables, fruit and whole grains are high in fiber while being relatively low in calories.
  • Skip the high calorie drinks. You most likely consume more calories than you realize when drinking alcohol, soda and coffee, so switching to water is one easy way to cut calories.
  • Don’t skip meals. Eat every few hours to keep you from snacking on high calorie foods during hunger cravings. Aim for 3 meals and 2 healthy snacks per day.

Focusing on calorie reduction is one method of weight loss, but it is not the only weight loss option. While counting calories may seem like the most logical way to lose weight, it’s also important to focus on the nutritional value of those calories to ensure your body gets the nutrients it needs.
